November 17, 2006 -- The Missouri Quality Systems Assessment (QSA) program has successfully completed its scheduled audit by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Missouri’s QSA program continues to stay compliant with USDA and the cattle involved in the program are and will continue to be eligible for the Japan beef export market.

The Missouri QSA umbrella program was the first of its kind and has proven to be an example of the symbiotic relationship that can exist between private industry and government partners. The end result of this partnership has benefited participating producers.

The Missouri Department of Agriculture ( MDA) began fully implementing the QSA program approved by the (USDA) on October 11, 2005.

Missouri was the first state in the U.S. to implement a QSA program allowing producers to sell source and age verified cattle with third party verification. Missouri is the second largest cow/calf producer in the U.S. and with programs such as QSA, Missouri will continue to be a supplier of high quality beef both in the domestic and gobal market places.

Eligibility

In order to be eligible for a supplier evaluation, a cow/calf producer’s actual calving records defining the calving season must be available.

Producers can enroll their cattle in one of the Approved Programs or as an independent producer under the Missouri Department of Agriculture’s umbrella QSA program. Producers must agree to an on-site evaluation by a trained Supplier Evaluator who will review the producer’s records to verify that they have the appropriate documen tation to prove the age and source of their cattle. Once approved, the producer will be placed on the program’s supplier list.

Producers can continue to sell cattle as they have in the past. No restrictions to selling cattle through certain locations or certain times exist. Once the cattle are tagged and remain tagged, they are source and age verified.

**The QSA program was developed by MDA and IMI Global in cooperation with MFA, Joplin Regional Stockyards, Missouri Veterinary Medical Association, Missouri Cattlemen’s Association and the Missouri Livestock Marketing Association.
