Taste Missouri Wine Country
Missouri has a long history of growing grapes and making wine, reaching back nearly 150 years. Missouris wine production was interrupted by Prohibition, but is now enjoying a renaissance begun 30 years ago, showing marked increases in market share, sales, and national and international awards. Missouris more than 50 wineries attract more than 2.5 million visitors each year.
Legislation passed in 1984 created a four-cent per gallon tax on all wine sold in Missouri to be used for research, development and promotion of Missouri grapes, wines and juices. In 1988, the tax was increased to six cents a gallon. This tax revenue funds the departments Grape and Wine Board.
The program coordinates marketing and public relations activities with wholesalers, restaurateurs, retailers, and the general public. Top priorities include building consumer awareness of the quality and availability of Missouri wines and juices. The program also hosts the Midwest Regional Grape and Wine Conference, State Fair Wine Competition and Awards Ceremony, trade seminars and educational seminars for growers, wine makers, and consumers.
