Scanning Devices

Many stores use electronic scanners to determine prices at the check out counter. These scanners are linked to a computer that computes the price of the item by reading a code on the product or the tag.

Missouri weights and measures officials inspect scanners to ensure they are accurate. If they’re not, both consumers and businesses can lose money.

The National Conference on Weights and Measures offers these suggestions:

  1. Watch as the price of the item shows on the check out register.
  2. Ask the clerk to check the price if you think the scanned price is incorrect.
  3. If the scanned price does not agree with the posted price, ask the store manager to correct it.
  4. Save the cash register receipt in case you have questions or a problem later on.

If the problem is not resolved, contact the Missouri Division of Weights and Measures at (573) 751-5639.
